While Ubisoft is not planning to abandon
Starlink: Battle for Atlas anytime soon, Ubisoft Toronto's recent toys-to-life video game has officially underperformed, forcing the French publisher to drastically change their original post-launch strategy for last year's critically acclaimed open-world project.
"
Despite the immense and continuous support from our players, the sales for Starlink: Battle for Atlas fell below expectations," the Starlink Development Team explained on the game's website.
"
Consequently, we recently made the decision to not release any additional physical toys for the Spring update and in the future," meaning that Ubisoft's ambitious plan to revive the slowly dying genre (popularized by
Skylanders and
Disney Infinity) didn't pan out as the studio had hoped.
"
Additionally, there will be a ton of free content to expand your games such as additional missions, challenges and new activities to engage in throughout Atlas, including content that was inspired by community suggestions, such as Outlaw Racing." The April update will also bring
Star Fox’s trusty wingmen Peppy, Slippy, and Falco as playable heroes to the core experience, exclusively on the Switch.
"
We're very grateful for the support we have received from players around the world and can't wait for everyone to get their hands on our next big update launching this April." Considering that Ubisoft has mastered the "games as a service" approach to designing their games, Ubisoft Toronto should support the title for years to come, even if
Starlink's initial sales figures are somewhat disappointing.
