In the last few years, Obsidian Entertainment managed to almost single-handedly revive the forgotten genre of isometric RPGs thanks to the projects such as
Pillars of Eternity and
Tyranny. Their last game that wasn't set in the fantasy setting was
Fallout: New Vegas and
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II was Obsidian's last sci-fi game. The old status quo may change soon.
The company has recently registered
The Outer Worlds trademark. The smart fans have immediately started to suspect that the studio's upcoming game is somehow connected to E. J. Gilmour's
The Outer Worlds: Book One of the Epherian Chronicles book. That theory might sound like a bit of reaching, but the book's synopsis suits the hypothetical project quite well:
The alien invasion spreads through the galaxy. The only salvation of mankind lies on the shoulders of the exile from the ancient empire and his team. They must work together to prevent the destruction of humanity.
The description seems an awful lot like the synopsis for the
Mass Effect series. Would you like to play a new Obsidian's sci-fi game?
