Lucas Pope, the creator of Papers, Please and Return of the Obra Dinn, sat down with arstechnica for a long and detailed interview about game development. Pope spoke about the creation and development of Uncharted and how the third-person shooter Gears of War helped and inspired the game's mechanics.
Pope states that the creation of Uncharted 1 did not have a clear path. Gears of War launched before Uncharted hit the shelves and the game's mechanics helped Naughty Dog mold their own third-person shooter.
"Uncharted 1 was announced, and then Gears [of War] came out," Pope says. "And Gears invented the modern third-person shooter. Suddenly, Gears came out and showed them how to do it. So we changed everything, six months before release."
Some changes included in the six months are: camera perspective, controls, general movement, real-time cut scenes and a fully voiced story. The developer got hints and tips from Gears of War but did not stray too much from their original design.
One of the most distinguished features of Gears is the cover system and how players can take cover with almost anything on the battlefield. Naughty Dog changed up their camera system and made this same shielding method available in their game.
