It's been more than two years since Nathan Drake graced the big screen in Sony Pictures' Uncharted live-action film adaptation. The blockbuster film, directed by Ruben Fleischer, was a box office hit for Sony, with more than $400 million grossed worldwide on a $120 million budget.
Sony and those involved in the first film have been keen on the idea of a sequel. Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures, previously referred to Uncharted as a new movie franchise for Sony, and director Ruben Fleischer expressed interest in returning to helm another film.
But until now, we haven't had much to go by officially. We still haven't had a proper announcement, but during the 2024 CineEurope trade show on Monday, Sony Pictures gave a studio presentation that revealed a number of film projects in the works.
Among the lengthy list of movies mentioned by Sony’s President of International Distribution Steven O’Dell was another Uncharted movie. Unfortunately, besides acknowledging that another Uncharted movie is happening, no further details were provided.
Sony's Uncharted movie adaptation starred Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Victor Sullivan, with Sophia Ali, Tati Gabrielle, and Antonio Banderas in supporting roles. Inspired by the blockbuster video game franchise, the film follows a street-smart Nathan Drake who is recruited by a seasoned treasure hunter, Victor "Sully" Sullivan, to help recover a 500-year-old lost fortune amassed by explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Competing to locate the fabled treasure is corrupt billionaire Santiago Moncada and mercenary leader Jo Braddock. Like the video games, Uncharted is an action-packed globe-trotting adventure with massive set pieces.
Uncharted's theatrical release was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but despite the delays, the film still found success at the box office. The film was met with mixed reception from critics, scoring just a 40% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it was a hit with fans, as evidenced by its 90% audience score. This translated into more than $407 million at the global box office, making it the fifth-highest grossing video game movie of all time.
"Promisingly cast but misleadingly titled, Uncharted mines its bestselling source material to produce a disappointing echo of superior adventure films," the critics consensus reads. The audience round-up, meanwhile, praises the film's action and terrific cast, calling it a "solid adaptation of the games -- and a fun throwback to classic adventure movies of the past."
At this point, no release date for the next Uncharted movie has been announced yet. But its nice to know that a sequel is still on the table.
