Halo: Campaign Evolved launched with a clear split in co-op support. On consoles, players get classic 2-player local split-screen. On PC, the game officially offers only online co-op for up to four players with full crossplay. That difference did not last long.
Players quickly discovered that the PC version still contains the split-screen systems from the console builds. HUD layouts, sign-in prompts, audio settings, and related code were left in the files rather than stripped out. A modder named JPurd123 has now released a tool on Nexus Mods that activates this dormant functionality.
The mod uses UE4SS to enable a second local player at runtime and remove the restrictions that kept split-screen locked. According to the mod page, it works by calling code that was already present in the PC build instead of adding entirely new systems. Installation involves adding UE4SS, placing the mod files, and adjusting launch options on Steam. It is currently confirmed working on the Steam version. The Microsoft Store/Xbox app version remains untested, and modified or pirated copies are unlikely to work.
Local split-screen has been part of Halo’s identity since the original trilogy. Many fans were disappointed when Halo 5: Guardians limited co-op to online play and when Halo Infinite launched without campaign co-op at all. Campaign Evolved’s decision to restore split-screen on consoles was widely welcomed. The discovery that the same systems exist on PC, even if officially disabled, has sparked immediate interest in the modding community.
Halo Studios and Microsoft have not commented on the findings or indicated whether official PC split-screen support will be added in a future patch. For now, the mod offers a practical workaround for players who want couch co-op on a single PC.
Halo: Campaign Evolved released on July 28, 2026, as a full remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign with updated visuals, quality-of-life improvements, and additional content. It is available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and launched day one on Game Pass. While online co-op works across platforms, local split-screen remains a console exclusive feature for the time being, at least officially.
The fact that the code was left intact suggests enabling it properly would not require a major technical overhaul. Whether Halo Studios chooses to do so remains to be seen. Until then, PC players who prefer local co-op have a community solution that takes advantage of what was already in the game files.
