Gears of War: E-Day is shaping up to deliver one of the strongest multiplayer packages the series has seen in years. Hands-on previews of both the new Horde Siege mode and classic Versus have left a positive impression, suggesting The Coalition is focused on refining what made the franchise’s multiplayer memorable while adding meaningful new ideas.
The game launches on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PC, and will be available day one with Game Pass. An open multiplayer beta begins August 6, giving players an early look at the modes before launch. Here is a quick overview of what they have shown us so far.
Horde Siege Changes the Formula
The biggest addition is Horde Siege, a new 12-player cooperative experience that reworks the classic Horde formula. Instead of a single four-player squad defending against waves, three separate squads of four share the same large map. Each squad pursues its own objectives while the others operate nearby, creating a more dynamic and unpredictable session.
Players choose from four classes at the start of a match: Assault, Breacher, Marksman, and Medic. Each class comes with a unique ability. The Breacher’s instant heal, for example, encourages aggressive plays and clutch revives that would be riskier in older Horde modes. Classes can be leveled and customized, with the full launch version expected to raise the level cap to 30.
Matches revolve around objectives tied to a device called the R.I.G. Squads may need to defend it, locate and install missing parts, or complete other tasks under pressure. Side missions scattered across the map offer optional challenges that grant useful perks if completed. Once the main objective is finished, all three squads move toward a shared extraction point. That final stage often turns chaotic, as players contend with heavy enemy forces and the presence of the other teams in a more open area.
Two variants of the mode exist. Blitz focuses on shorter, faster objectives, while Siege stretches the experience with longer goals. Classic four-player Horde will also be available for players who prefer the traditional format.
Early feedback points to Horde Siege as a highlight. The larger player count and overlapping objectives create moments of emergent teamwork and sudden conflict that standard Horde rarely produced. When squads coordinate well, the mode feels fresh. When they do not, the chaos remains entertaining in true Gears fashion.
Versus Benefits From Movement Upgrades
Versus returns in its familiar 4v4 structure, but with noticeable improvements to movement. Players can now jump, slide, and climb onto certain objects, adding new routes and combat options without abandoning the series’ cover-based foundation. These changes make fights more fluid and open up creative plays, such as sliding through tight gaps or using elevation in ways previous games did not allow.
The core fantasy remains intact. High-damage weapons, brutal executions, and the trademark intensity of Gears gunfights are all present. New tools, including a hook-firing heavy weapon and an acid shotgun, expand the arsenal. Modes such as Team Deathmatch and a new option called Crucible round out the competitive offering.
While the movement upgrades help modernize the experience, the skill ceiling for movement techniques like wall-bouncing still favors dedicated players. Casual sessions remain accessible and entertaining, especially in a coordinated group.

Looking Ahead
Gears of War: E-Day arrives as a prequel set during Emergence Day, the moment the Locust first appeared. The campaign will feature Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago in earlier versions of their characters and supports four-player online co-op along with two-player split-screen on console.
The multiplayer focus, however, is clearly on giving both longtime fans and new players strong reasons to stay after the story ends. Horde Siege stands as the most significant evolution of the series’ cooperative formula in years, while Versus receives practical quality-of-life and movement improvements that should help it feel current without losing its identity.
With the multiplayer beta scheduled for early August and the full release set for October 6, players will soon have the chance to judge the modes for themselves. Based on the first hands-on reports, The Coalition has built a multiplayer foundation that respects the past while giving the franchise fresh momentum.
Fourteen years before Gears of War, war heroes Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago return home to face a new nightmare: the Locust Horde. These subterranean monsters, grotesque and relentless, erupt from below, laying siege on humanity itself.
