Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty has revealed that the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day Direct presentation will last roughly 30 minutes. The standalone event, dedicated entirely to the new prequel game, is scheduled for June 7, 2026, immediately following the main Xbox Games Showcase.
Speaking on the official Xbox podcast, Booty expressed clear enthusiasm for the project and the team at The Coalition:
“I’ll say that we’ve got the Gears Direct coming, and after seeing that, we’ve probably got like a full 30 minutes, which is really great. And I don’t know. I just love everybody in that studio, the work they’re doing. I’m excited about the game, and we’re going to have a fantastic, full 30 minutes of stuff to see.”
This will mark the first substantial look at Gears of War: E-Day since its cinematic reveal at the 2024 Xbox Showcase. Fans have been waiting for gameplay footage, story details, and confirmation of key features ever since that initial teaser.
A 30-minute runtime suggests a focused, in-depth presentation rather than a quick teaser. Viewers can reasonably anticipate:
- Extended gameplay footage showcasing the return to the early days of the Locust War
- Details on how the prequel connects to the original Gears of War trilogy
- New mechanics, weapons, and enemy types
- Insights into the narrative, including Marcus Fenix’s early experiences and the emergence of the Locust Horde
- Possible multiplayer or co-op information, given the franchise’s strong history in that area
The event being separate from the main Xbox Showcase allows The Coalition to give the game the dedicated spotlight it deserves without being squeezed into a broader presentation.
During the same interview, Booty also addressed his recent promotion to Chief Content Officer following Phil Spencer’s retirement. He downplayed the title change, viewing it primarily as recognition of the work done by Xbox’s studios rather than a shift in his day-to-day responsibilities.
“The title is more than anything a reflection of the work that the studios do. It is so core to who we are as Xbox and all the work that all our teams do across all our studios. It’s a validation of their work… I think it brings, again, a validation that says that one, Xbox takes these studios seriously, that Microsoft takes it seriously, and that content, things we build; all our great games [are] important.”
Booty emphasized that his core job remains unchanged: supporting the studios and helping deliver great games. He also highlighted the collaborative nature of Microsoft’s gaming division, noting that many studios frequently work together across projects.
Gears of War: E-Day is one of the most anticipated titles in the franchise’s history. Set before the events of the original game, it offers a chance to experience the beginning of the Locust War with modern visuals, refined gameplay, and deeper storytelling. A dedicated 30-minute Direct gives the team ample time to show meaningful gameplay rather than just another cinematic trailer.
With the main Xbox Showcase happening just before the Gears Direct, June 7 is shaping up to be a significant day for Xbox fans. Those specifically interested in the Gears franchise will want to stick around after the broader showcase for what promises to be a packed half-hour of new information.
While we still do not have an exact release date for Gears of War: E-Day, the existence of a full dedicated presentation strongly suggests the game is progressing well and could be targeting a 2027 or late 2026 window.
Fans have waited years for a new mainline Gears experience. The upcoming Direct finally feels like the moment the franchise begins to show what it can do on modern hardware with current-generation development tools.
Mark your calendars, and rev up your lancer chainsaws for June 7. After years of silence, Gears of War: E-Day is finally ready for the spotlight.
