When Animal Crossing: New Horizons was announced, fans of the series were ridiculously excited to finally see Nintendo giving the long-neglected series some well-deserved loved. The game was finally released in March of this year, and fans showed their support by purchasing the recently released title.
The game was estimated to have sold a very impressive 5 million copies a week after its release, and it wasn't until may that Nintendo would not only confirm that the game had been selling like hot cakes, but also officially revealed that it wasn't a mere 5 million sold worldwide, but a staggering 11.77 million units.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons selling 11.77 million copies worldwide was revealed during Nintendo's financial results for the fiscal year ended on the 31st of March, which is only 11 days after the release of the critically acclaimed social simulation title.
To top things off, in June Nintendo also announced that Animal Crossing: New Horizons had already managed to surpass the company's expected lifetime sales, which is an absolutely insane feat for the game to have pulled off; not even 3 months after the release, mind you.
As it turns out, customers still can't get enough of the game, and Nintendo has recently announced, via their Q1 results for the fiscal year ending March 2021, that Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold over a very impressive 20 million copies worldwide; to be more precise, 22.40 million units as of the 6th of August.
Nintendo also compares Animal Crossing: New Horizons' sales numbers to the Nintendo 3DS' Animal Crossing: New Leaf, revealing that the former has almost doubled the 12 million units sold on their previous generation handheld console; officially making New Horizons the best-selling title in the Animal Crossing series.
