Earlier this month, Nintendo released the last
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct, which introduced us to three new characters, as well as giving us a glimpse at the game's brand-new Story Mode: World of Light.
While the World of Light preview didn't really give away much about the mode itself, it did begin with a rather interesting cinematic that saw every single one of the characters in
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate being completely obliterated by an army of Master Hands; except for Kirby, who miracoulously managed to escape aboard his iconic Warp Star.
When fans saw that Kirby was the only character to survive the unfortunate event, fans immediately thought that this had to do with Kirby being a character created by Masahiro Sakurai—who is also the creator of the
Super Smash Bros. series. It turns out that, while he is a little biased, keeping Kirby alive wasn't really because it's his creation, al least not entirely.
In a recent interview published by Famitsu and translated by Source Gaming, Masahiro Sakurai reveals that the reason behind Kirby being the only survivor wasn't just because he created the character but because, by elimination, it was the obvious choice all along.
"
We needed a solid, convincing reason for why said character could outrun Galeem. All fighters possessing “normal” abilities were immediately disqualified. Given that its assault enveloped the ends of the galaxy, only a vehicle that could defy the laws of physics would work. Even short-distance teleportation wouldn’t be enough",explains Sakurai while suggesting that Kirby has one thing that other characters don't, which makes Kirby's escape far more convincing.
"
Some of you may have forgotten, but Kirby’s Warp Star has been able to, y’know, warp since his very first game. That alone made him a pretty solid contender. The only other two fighters that could have survived would have been Bayonetta or Palutena. That said, Bayonetta’s enemies from Purgatorio (a hellish other world) were turned into Spirits, so it wouldn’t have made sense for her to escape. Other divine beings like Hades were also turned into Spirits, so there was no way Palutena could have survived, too".
So, there you have it. It was Kirby's iconic Warp Star the only thing that made them choose Kirby as the one and only survivor. Truth be told, his explanation does actually make sense, but what gives this whole thing even more credibility is the fact that he actually considered Palutena and even Bayonetta to be the ones that could've been saved, and he gives a good reason as to why they still wouldn't have been able to survive.
