Yesterday, Nintendo streamed a Nintendo Direct that focuses, yet again, on the highly anticipated
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The game is living up to its name by featuring the ultimate crossover in gaming history with characters from renowned series like
Castlevania,
Sonic the Hedgehog,
Metal Gear, and even
Street Fighter—to name only but a few of them.
The
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct wasted no time and introduced us to Ken Masters, hailing from Capcom's
Street Fighter series, and Incineroar from
Pokémon Sun/Moon. Incineroar will be an original character while Ken is an echo fighter version of Ryu, albeit faster and with some slightly different moves. These two characters are the last fighters to be revealed for the game that will be available at launch.
Nintendo also revealed that Piranha Plant, from the
Super Mario Bros. series, will also be joining the roster as a playable character. This character, however, is part of the post-launch content and will be available for free only for a limited time as an early purchase bonus for players who pre-order
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate before the
9th of December. After the time expires, Piranha Plant will be available for players to purchase as DLC; each set of DLC including one character, one stage, and multiple music tracks.
Players can also purchase the
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass, which will give players access to all 5 DLC sets and will retail for $24.99 MSRP. Since the developers have not yet began working on the DLC, this will be taking them a little bit longer and will not be available at launch. Nintendo has also mentioned that these sets will be released throughout 2019 but all sets are expected to be available by February of 2020.
The
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct also revealed a lot of interesting aspects regarding the game itself. The game will be featuring a new mode called Spirits, which will allow players to add different spirits to their characters in order to enhance their powers, as well as an Adventure mode that had a surprisingly grim cinematic that saw all of the characters in the game, except for Kirby, being obliterated by a new all-powerful villain.
Please, check out the new characters, as well as the 40-minute-long
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct below:
