Nintendo And Illumination Team Up For New Animated MARIO Movie

A new animated Mario movie is in the works between Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment, the studio behind Despicable Me, Minions, and Sing.

Everyone's favorite plumber is returning to the big screen. Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment are teaming up to create a new movie starring the legendary video game character Mario.

There had been reports back in November that Nintendo was close to signing a deal with the studio behind Despicable Me to produce an animated Super Mario Bros. movie, and now it's official.

"Nintendo and Illumination are partnering on a movie starring Mario, co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri!" Nintendo of America announced in a post on Twitter.

Mario doesn't exactly have the best track record when it comes to big screen adaptations, but 1993's flop was a live-action take on the character. With Nintendo teaming up with the studio behind animated hits like Despicable Me, Minions, and Sing, the movie is already off to a more promising start.

There's no word on when the Super Mario animated movie will hit theaters, but the character is riding high following the successful launch of Super Mario Odyssey, which has sold more than 9 million copies since its debut on the Nintendo Switch in October.
