Mega Man 11 has reached a significant milestone, as the game is reported to have sold a very respectable 2 million copies, seven years after its original release on consoles and PC.
The news was revealed through Capcom's report for their Platinum Titles — a detailed highlight of the products that have managed to sell 1 million copies — which was recently updated.
Mega Man 11 had already joined Capcom's Platinum Titles list in September of 2019, just one year after its release, with 1 million copies sold, trailing behind the 1.1 million units Mega Man Legacy Collection had sold since its release in August of 2015.
For the longest time, the highest-selling title in the series was Mega Man 2 for the NES, with 1.5 million units sold as of 2019; a record that Mega Man 11 broke in 2022, becoming the best-selling title in the franchise with 1.6 million copies sold.
As it stands, following Capcom's most recent updating of their Game Series Sales report, the Mega Man series is the company's fourth best-selling franchise with 42 million units sold, behind Street Fighter (56 million copies), Monster Hunter (108 million copies), and Resident Evil (167 million copies).
What this means for the franchise as a whole, however, is anybody's guess. Mega Man 11 is the most recent original title Capcom has released that isn't a collection or a mobile game. Besides the eleventh entry in the mainline Mega Man series, Capcom released Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection in May of 2023.
Interestingly, Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection performed satisfactorily, selling 1.42 million copies as of October of the same year in which it launched. The game's rather quick success prompted an investor to ask about the current state of the franchise.
"Please tell me what plans you have for the Mega Man series," requested to know an unnamed shareholder during Capcom's 45th Ordinary General Meeting of Shareholders from July of 2024, to which a Capcom spokesperson responded, "Mega Man is one of our highly-valued IPs and we are considering how to create games for it on an ongoing basis."
Capcom's statement is frustratingly vague, especially because Mega Man 11 hit store shelves in 2018 and no new games have been announced since. A potential Mega Man X9 was teased in the music album for Mega Man X Legacy Collection, which was also released in 2018 and still no new Mega Man X title in sight.
Only time will tell whether Capcom truly has any plans for the Blue Bomber.
The Blue Bomber makes his triumphant return in Mega Man 11! Gear up with a brand-new entry in the storied series, bringing together classic gameplay and the brand-new Double Gear System to help new players out of tricky situations and give experienced players just the edge they need to squash Dr. Wily's latest scheme.
Mega Man 11 is currently available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
