Fans of Sonic the Hedgehog are a rather interesting breed. They are often considered to be the memelords of video game culture, and this is all very in line with the edge the very same character has always been supposed to have.
Who doesn't remember when the Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account called out Mighty No. 9's for the infamous "anime fans on prom night" line from one of the game's trailer? Or when the same account simply posted " RIP @YouTubeGaming" followed by an image with the Twitch logo?
Interestingly enough, the Sonic the Hedgehog twitter account is infamous for being one of, if not, the edgiest accounts based on a video game franchise out there, and this is all thanks to Aaron Webber — who is the man in charge of social media and PR at Sega.
Today, Webber has shared a heartfelt message on the Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account, as he reveals that after five years he's stepping down as PR and social media manager, and will be moved to a new position at Sega — so this probably isn't the last fans will see of him.
In his good by message, Webber even reveals that he actually decided to stop running tweets through approvals in Japan, and that said decision was a very risky move, as well as a "good way to lose your job," but it all ended up playing in his favour, since the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account also began to grow at a fast rate.
If anything, most of the meme culture that Sonic the Hedgehog fans have embraced is actually because of Webber — who has singlehandedly been posting memes, jokes, and uplifting posts since 2015, but he does reassure that the changes fans will see after steps down will be appreciated, and he also thanks fans for those amazing five years he spent doing his job.
