Earlier today,
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that they had acquired Insomniac Games — known for acclaimed titles such as
Marvel's Spider-Man, the
Ratchet & Clank series, and
Sunset Overdrive, to name but a few; something that nobody could've seen coming, but everybody was quick to embrace.
With the announcement, many fans of the
Sunset Overdrive series began wondering whether this new acquisition by Sony Interactive Entertainment would negatively affect the future of the series; keeping in mind that
Sunset Overdrive is an Xbox One console exclusive.
Sony Entertainment Interactive Chairman Shawn Layden recently revealed, during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, that the future of the
Sunset Overdrive series is quite uncertain at the moment, since their focus is on taking full advantage of some other intellectual properties from Insomniac Games.
When specifically asked about the
Sunset Overdrive series, Layden said that "
That was a great experience for Insomniac and they learned a lot through that, as well. As far as the IP itself, we really haven’t turned over the files on that one to see what that actually means, to be honest. We like what they’ve been doing in the Spider-Man franchise and things like Ratchet & Clank are certainly vital series in the present and future. That’s what we’re concentrating on."
While this may sound like Sony has no interest in keeping the
Sunset Overdrive series alive, this doesn't mean that they would completely neglect it, since it is understandable that they would want to work on
Marvel's Spider-Man and
Ratchet & Clank; after all, those are the IPs they now own rights to.
While
Sunset Overdrive may be an Insomniac Games intellectual property, the title itself is a Microsoft-exclusive title so, even if the series was to find a new home on Sony platforms, chances of the first game releasing on a PlayStation console are rather slim.
