It's been rumoured for some time now, but Walt Disney Animation Studios confirmed today that a Wreck-It Ralph sequel is happening. A March 9th, 2018 release date has been set, meaning that it takes the slot previously held by the Jack and the Beanstalk inspired Gigantic (which has been moved to November). Rich Moore will return to direct the currently untitled follow-up for the studio.
It has also been revealed that John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman will return to voice Ralph and Vanellope, and that Wreck-It Ralph co-writer Phil Johnston is joining Moore as co-director and writer. The first instalment revolved around classic arcade games, but this one will find Ralph’s wrecking wreaking havoc on the internet as the world of Wreck-It Ralph now moves into the virtual space.
That's a premise with a ton of potential, though video game fans will of course be more interested in seeing which classic franchises this instalment ends up paying homage to. Check out the first image from the Wreck-It Ralph sequel below, and share your thoughts on this news in the usual place.
