Square Enix has unveiled extensive gameplay changes coming to Final Fantasy XIV with the next expansion, Evercold, set to launch in January 2027. The details were revealed during the keynote speech at the first Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Anaheim, California, on April 24, 2026.
The expansion takes players to the Fourth Reflection, a new zone threatened by a mysterious frost that has choked the land. Expect a world filled with mysterious crystalline constructs, Norse-inspired architecture, and adorable dwarf-like cat creatures. The story continues the Warrior of Light’s journey as they work with allies to protect Azeroth from destruction.
One of the biggest changes is the new Adventurer Activity system. This replaces the traditional Duty Roulette bonuses with a free Battle Pass-like progression system. Players can earn rewards including tomestones, gear, and more by engaging with their preferred types of content. The system includes catch-up mechanics for players who fall behind on weekly progress. A seasonal structure will also be implemented, with each season lasting two patch cycles.
New Job Action System: Reborn Mode vs. Evolved Mode
Evercold introduces a dual job action system that gives players more choice in how they experience combat:
Reborn Mode functions like the current system, with jobs operating similarly to how they do now in Dawntrail and previous expansions.
Evolved Mode offers a streamlined experience with different rotations, fewer buttons, and simplified gameplay flow.
Players can switch between the two modes at any time while out of combat. Additionally, the game will automatically use the highest item level across all of a player’s leveled jobs, removing the need to gear each job individually.
Evolved Mode will be available for every job, including the two new jobs coming in Evercold. Reborn Mode will remain exclusive to the 21 core jobs from A Realm Reborn through Dawntrail. Limited jobs such as Blue Mage and Beastmaster will not have access to Reborn Mode.
Battle Content and Quality-of-Life Updates
Significant improvements are coming to battle content:
- Enhanced zone and quest design, including updates to FATEs and The Hunt.
- A new mid-tier difficulty for eight-man raids, positioned between Normal and Savage.
- Adjusted progression routes for Alliance raids.
- A variety of new instanced content, including a crossover Alliance raid with Evangelion.
Several quality-of-life features will arrive even before the expansion in Patch 7.5x:
- Same-region player matching, allowing players across all data centers in a region to play together.
- Final Fantasy XIV coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026, with early access stress tests beginning soon.
- The award-winning Shadowbringers expansion will be added to the free trial when Patch 7.5 arrives on April 28, 2026 - making this an ideal time for new players to join.
These changes represent one of the most substantial gameplay overhauls in recent Final Fantasy XIV history, aiming to improve accessibility, customization, and long-term engagement while preserving the game’s beloved core identity.
With the expansion still nine months away, the April 24 Fan Festival keynote has given the community plenty to discuss and theorycraft in the meantime. The combination of new progression systems, flexible job modes, and expanded endgame content suggests Evercold will be a major evolution for the long-running MMORPG.
Players can look forward to more details in the coming months as Square Enix continues to build hype for the January 2027 launch.
