With the recent announcement of our upcoming multiplayer beta for Dawn of War II, we are going to be posting a few articles that will give you an idea of what to expect from each of the races in the game in terms of multiplayer strategies. We kick things off with a look at the Space Marines and what they bring to the battlefield. Relic’s Jeff Lydell takes things from here:
Space Marines are the most iconic race of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. They are genetically modified super-soldiers in power armor, capable of fighting off endless hordes of mutants, heretics, and xenos.
When it came time to design them for multiplayer, we wanted them to live up to their mythos, more so than any of the previous games. We made them tougher, harder to kill, and fewer in number. This gives the Space Marines a real “against all odds” feel during the game. We didn’t hold back on how tough each unit was either; Tactical Marine squads can punish their enemies through high ranged damage, and their melee units are well suited to wandering into superior numbers.
The three Space Marine heroes are the Force Commander, Apothecary, and Techmarine. These heroes specialties play off each other really well. The Force Commander is a melee specialist who charge into superior numbers of enemies, the Apothecary can support him and surrounding troops by healing, and the Techmarine can build turrets and teleporter relay beacons to keep re-supplying the armies in the forward lines. When the three heroes are working together, they can thrust into combat, keep their backbone strong, and prevent counterattacks.
Space Marines aren’t just limited to tough heroes. They have Tactical Marines who specialize in ranged combat, two different types of Devastator Squads, Assault squads, and Scout squads. They can also field Dreadnoughts, Predator tanks, and when things get really bad, they can deep strike Terminators, which are one of the toughest units in the game.
To use the marines effectively, you need to play tactically. Since each squad represents a high investment, it’s worth doing what it takes to keep them alive. Space Marines don’t automatically counter bigger forces; you need to play each situation effectively. Devastators equipped with Heavy Bolters will suppress large groups of clustered enemies, and present you with an opportunity to punish the enemy. If you find you are taking fire from an enemy heavy weapon, you can use Assault Marine’s Jump ability to quickly counter it. If you find an enemy force light on anti-vehicle weapons, a Dreadnought will lay waste to anyone it can get its fists on. If the enemy is fielding vehicles you can equip Missile launchers on your Tactical marines, and keep them sheltered in cover while they fire.
To counter Space Marines, you need to look at what they don’t have. Since their squads are expensive, at any given time they probably have a hole in their counters somewhere. Try and identify what that is, and exploit it the best you can. Since Space Marines have a lot invested in any given squad, killing them sets them back more than with other races.
We tried to capture the flavor of the Space Marines from the literature, and whether you choose to fight with them or against them, you will likely learn to respect, admire, and fear their forces. We’ve been enjoying playing with them, and we hope you will too.
