Just when we thought that PlayStation couldn't surprise us any more, they announce that a co-op multiplayer mode will be added to Sucker Punch's critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima; in what is likely the most unexpected announcement they could've made for this phenomenal single-player title.

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is the base game's new co-op multiplayer mode, and the developers at Sucker Punch have revealed that this particular mode will be added to Ghost of Tsushima via a free update this Fall, although there is a small caveat that may ruin the news for some.

This new co-op multiplayer mode can only be played online, which means that Ghost of Tsushima: Legends will require players to have a PlayStation Plus subscription in order to play the game with others.

With that said, there is still a bunch of things to get excited over this new co-op online multiplayer mode, as Sucker Punch reveals that Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is actually a completely new story that focuses on four warriors "that have been built up as legends" in stories that the people of Tsushima have told.

What makes this interesting is that these stories, since they are being told as legends, will see these four warriors fighting enemies that are based on Japanese folk tales; completely straying from Ghost of Tsushima's more grounded story.

"Legends is an entirely new experience — it’s a separate mode that doesn’t follow Jin or the companions from his journey, but instead focuses on four warriors who have been built up as legends in stories told by the people of Tsushima.

"Ghost of Tsushima’s single-player campaign focuses on an open world and exploring the natural beauty of the island, but Legends is haunting and fantastical, with locations and enemies inspired by Japanese folk tales and mythology and an emphasis on cooperative combat and action," explains Senior Game Designer at Sucker Punch Darren Bridges.

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends will allow players to team up in teams of 2 to 4 players via matchmaking, and will be able to pick between the Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, or Assassin; each class giving players some different abilities will be revealing as we draw closer to its release.

Things get even more interesting, since Ghost of Tsushima: Legends will also give players a series of co-op Story missions. These new story missions will play pretty much exactly like the game's single player campaign, although players will fight against mythical creatures, so the enemies will definitely make things more difficult for the players.

There is still more, as Sucker Punch also reveals that a four-player Raid will be added to Ghost of Tsushima: Legends shortly after this new co-op multiplayer mode becoems available this Fall — where players and the rest of their team will be sent to a new realm where they will fight one terrifying, and brutal enemy.

Have a look:

In 1274, the fearsome Mongol Empire invades the Japanese island of Tsushima and slaughters its legendary samurai defenders. Jin Sakai is one of the last survivors of a noble samurai clan. To combat his overwhelming foes, he must pioneer deadly new fighting techniques--the way of The Ghost--and wage an unconventional war for the people of Japan.

Ghost of Tsushima is currently available exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
