MARVEL's Spider-Man: Miles Morales was released last Thursday, and players can purchase it now for $49.99 USD. The reason why the game isn't $60 is mainly because it is technically a spin-off of a PlayStation 4 games that could even be considered an expansion.
The point we are trying to make here is that while MARVEL's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is on the PlayStation 5, one could argue that it isn't really a fully fledged next-gen title; don't get me wrong, though, since it is a next-gen title through and through, but some may still argue that it isn't, and they wouldn't be completely wrong.
According to an article on Bloomberg, video game prices are going up for the first time in 15 years, and companies like Microsoft and Sony may be fully embracing this as they transition into the next generation of consoles, which as of last week is already here.
This information suggests that the price of video games will go from the standard $60 to $70 in this new generation of consoles, and the news is not really boding well with some players; if not most players, to be quite fair.
During a recent interview wiht The Telegraph, PlayStation Chief Executive Officer Jim Ryan was asked whether he considers the new $70 price tag fair for next-gen games, and he actually reveals that the hours put into next-gen games more than justify the new price.
"Yes, yes, I do," replied Ryan when asked about the new price for video games. "If you measure the hours of entertainment provided by a video game, such as Demon's Souls compared to any other form of entertainment, I think that's a very straightforward comparison to draw."
Ryan also labelled as "categorically false" allegations that Sony would be considering to sell PlayStation 5 games at prices even higher than $70, while also adding that "I'm not making any predictions about anything that might or might not happen in the future," when asked to confirm whether games developed by PlayStation Studios would carry the $70 price tag.
Ryan does make a valid point when it comes to hours of entertainment put into the games justifying the new price tag, but it is also a rather bold statement to make when only some of these games will be priced differently.
MARVEL's Spider-Man: Miles Morales retails for $49.99USD while Demon's Souls is preiced at $69.99USD, both from PlayStation Studios but priced very differently, and this is what some players consider controversial — which, again, wouldn't be objectively wrong.
