Sony announced yesterday, Tuesday the 3rd of December, that the PlayStation had been certified as the best-selling home video game console brand ever by Guinness World Records; an official certification that they actually received on the 7th of November.
The announcement was made during the PlayStation's 25th anniversary, where Sony also revealed that — as a home video game console brand — Guinness World Records considered the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4; handheld systems were not included.
While Sony didn't exactly reveal how many consoles had been sold since the original PlayStation's release, the certification claims it's over 450 million units sold across every iteration of the popular video game console — which is, regardless, quite an impressive number.
What's even more impressive is that the PlayStation single-handedly managed to beat out Nintendo and Xbox; considering that Nintendo alone is currently on its seventh home console, while the PlayStation is currently only on its fourth.
