Amazon's God of War TV series adaptation has reportedly already been greenlit for the second season. The highly anticipated adaptation of the beloved PlayStation video game franchise was ordered at Amazon in December 2022.
Despite the excitement surrounding the project, it hasn't been without setbacks. Last October, it was confirmed that series showrunner/executive producer Rafe Judkins, along with EPs Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus had left the project after completing multiple scripts. With Amazon and Sony Pictures Television opting to go a different direction with the scripts, the project was essentially rebooted from scratch.
It was reported shortly afterward that Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind creator Ronald D. Moore had joined as new showrunner, writer, and executive producer for God of War. There hasn't been many updates about the series since then, but in a recent interview with Battlestar Galactica actress Katee Sackhoff, Moore revealed that Amazon has actually ordered two seasons of the show.
"Right now, I’m working on an adaptation of, there’s a video game called God of War, a big title in the gaming world that Amazon has ordered two seasons of and they’ve asked me to come in," Moore revealed. "So I’m literally in the writer’s room, and working on that. That’s my new thing."
Moore also went on to reveal that despite his prominent role in the project, he's actually not a gamer.
He continued, "And I'm not a gamer, so it's even more like, 'Okay, I've never done this before.'"
“I’ve tried," he admitted. "I’m not a gamer, you know. I’ve taken a stab at it but I don’t have… I grew up in the arcade era […] but the controllers now […] ‘Press R1.’ And I’m like, which one is R1? Oh, I’m dead.”
The fact that Moore doesn't play games may concern some fans of the PlayStation series, but it's worth pointing out that just because he can't grasp the complex control systems of modern games doesn't mean he doesn't have a firm understanding of the source material. Given his history in the industry and his impressive resume, and the fact that Amazon has already ordered two seasons, seems to indicate confidence in his ability to lead this project.
We're still not sure exactly what direction Amazon and Sony will go with its God of War series, although the original story from Fergus and Otsby was supposed to adapt the Norse era, beginning with the events of the 2018 video game. It's unclear if that is still the main focus or if Moore will take the series in another direction.
Amazon has already seen great success with another video game adaptation in Fallout. The first season of the show, an adaptation of Bethesda's popular post-apocalyptic video game franchise, was met with rousing success and was among the streaming service's top three most-watched titles ever. Amazon renewed Fallout for a second season back in April 2024.
