Following news that Ryan Hurst has been cast to play Kratos in Prime Video's upcoming God of War TV series, Variety is now reporting another addition to the cast.
According to the trade publication, Teresa Palmer has joined the cast of the live-action adaptation. No official announcement has been made, but sources report that Palmer will star as Sif.
In the games, Sif is the wife of Thor and one of the chief Aesir. However, Sif is not really a major character in the mainline God of War games, and is mostly only mentioned in passing in the 2018 God of War and its sequel Ragnarök, which Prime Video's series is expected to adapt elements from.
Palmer's reported casting as Sif could indicate that the upcoming TV adaptation will expand upon the broader Norse pantheon and relationships among the gods beyond what the games depicted. It doesn't necessarily mean that Sif will be a major focal point of the story, but the TV adaptation may expand on Norse characters more than the games did.
Teresa Palmer has an extensive and impressive acting resume, which includes nominations for the AACTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for 2006's psychological drama 2:37, as well as AACTA International Awards for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Dorothy Schutte in 2016's epic biographical war film Hacksaw Ridge. The Australian actress also had supporting roles in The Grudge 2, Bedtime Stories, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, I Am Number Four, Triple 9, and The Fall Guy.
In television, she's had leading roles as Diana Bishop in the fantasy drama series A Discovery of Witches and Freya Heywood in The Clearing, for which she earned a nomination for the AACTA Award for Best Lead Actress in a Television Drama.
Palmer's reported casting comes just days after Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios officially announced that Ryan Hurst will play Kratos in the upcoming series. Hurst is well-known among fans of the Sony video game franchise as he played Thor in PlayStation's God of War Ragnarök, earning him a BAFTA Award nomination for his performance.
The God of War series, which has already been ordered for two seasons, is currently in pre-production with principal photography slated to begin in March. It is being directed by Frederick E.O. Toye with Ronald D. Moore as showrunner.
The series is expected skip the Greek saga entirely and begin with the Norse saga, adapting 2018's God of War, with a logline that reads: "Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human." With two seasons already ordered, it's possible that 2022's Ragnarök sequel will serve as the focal story of Season 2.
A premiere date has not yet been announced.
