A UK Military Survival Instructor Says Dune: Awakening Looks Very Realistic

John Hudson calls Dune: Awakening’s desert outcrops incredibly realistic ahead of the September 22 console launch. Deluxe and Ultimate get in September 17. Single-player ships the same day.

Funcom sent a survival instructor into Dune: Awakening and asked him to treat Arrakis like a training ground. John Hudson, listed as the UK military’s chief survival instructor and consultant, walks hydration, shelter, heat, sandstorms, group carry weight, and worms in a new featurette timed to the September 22 console launch. His line on the scenery: "The rocky outcrops that the team of Dune: Awakening have built are incredibly realistic. They look like they have been sandblasted by desert storms. They look sculpted by the wind. Yet within them you can see some hope of refuge."

Hudson designs and runs survival courses in extreme climates, deserts included. Funcom is using that resume to sell the planet as the enemy, not a backdrop. The featurette maps game systems onto field rules: cover from sun, water discipline, sit out storms, do not walk alone with all the water on one pack. Arrakis still has the sandworm problem no real desert course has to budget for. The pitch is that you plan every trip, put a roof up, split resources, and make friends who can carry a stillsuit’s worth of spare.

Dune: Awakening hits PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on September 22, 2026. Deluxe ($69.99) and Ultimate ($89.99) owners start September 17. Standard is $49.99. Xbox Game Pass is on at launch. Play Anywhere shares progress between Xbox and the Microsoft Store. Funcom is targeting 60 fps in Performance mode on PS5 and Series X, with a Quality mode next to it. PC players get the same September pile: everything added since the June 2025 PC launch, plus the new single-player mode and the rest of Book One’s story. Private servers and public multiplayer stay options. Steam Deck and GeForce Now are already in the support list.

Single-player was the request Funcom kept hearing after PC launch. September 22 is the day that mode and the last chapter of the current story beat go to every platform together. Gamescom also locked in a Filmic Archive DLC tied to the Legendary films and cross-play after the console date. Later this year, a free Polar Cap map flips the temperature: cold survival instead of Hagga Basin heat.

Are you dropping onto Arrakis on the 17th with Deluxe, or waiting for Game Pass on the 22nd? What were your thoughts on their unique content with the survival instructor? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
