NetEase Games is taking a tougher stance on toxicity in Marvel Rivals. The team behind the hero shooter has announced that it has escalated its penalties for speech violations in both text and voice chat, with players who commit severe or repeated offenses set to face significantly harsher punishments.
The update was shared in a lengthy post on the official Marvel Rivals X account last week (October 15th). In it, the team explained that insults, harassment, discrimination, and hate speech hurt more than just the person on the receiving end, and can ruin communication and the match experience for everyone involved.
How The New Penalties Work
NetEase did not share an exact breakdown of the new punishments, but it did explain how it decides on them. According to the post, every verified offense is handled based on "the nature, severity, and historical record of the violation." In other words, a player's history will play a big part in how hard they get hit, and those with a track record of abusive behavior can expect much stronger action than someone flagged for the first time.
The team was blunt about where it stands on the issue. "Our stance on moderating toxic speech is clear and resolute. We will absolutely not treat these behaviors as acceptable simply because they are unfortunately common in competitive gaming," the post reads.
At the same time, NetEase made a point of saying that it respects players' right to share differing opinions. The line it draws is at malicious attacks, discrimination, and harassment, which it says should never be excused as normal communication or trash talk.
A New Moderation Policy Page
Alongside the harsher penalties, NetEase has launched a dedicated Moderation Policy page for Marvel Rivals. The goal is to help players better understand the game's speech moderation rules and the systems behind them, so there is less confusion about what crosses the line and what happens when it does.
The team also described moderation as "an ongoing, long-term commitment," and said it will keep refining how it identifies, reviews, and penalizes toxic speech over time. Players are being encouraged to use the in-game reporting tool whenever they run into a violation, since those reports feed directly into the review process.
Why It Matters For Marvel Rivals
Toxicity is a familiar problem in team-based shooters, and Marvel Rivals is no exception. With six-player teams, voice chat, and a ranked mode where a single loss can sting, tempers can flare quickly, and harassment in chat has been a common complaint from players since launch. Taking a firmer approach could go a long way toward making matches more enjoyable, especially for newer players who may be put off by abuse from teammates.
The post does not say whether the harsher penalties will be applied retroactively to players who already have violations on record, or how long suspensions and chat bans will now last. Since NetEase specifically mentioned a player's historical record, though, it sounds like past offenses will count against repeat offenders going forward. Players who want specifics on what is and is not allowed should find them on the new Moderation Policy page.
The crackdown also lands during a busy stretch for the game. Season 10.5 kicked off on October 9th, and the next stage of the Path to Doomsday storyline is set to bring Endgame, a 50-player PvE mode where players take on Thanos and his army, later this week. Big events like that tend to bring lapsed players back in, so it is a good time for NetEase to make its rules clear.
Do you think harsher penalties will make a real difference in Marvel Rivals matches, or would you rather see NetEase focus on better reporting and muting tools instead?
