God of War is out in 3 days and in the latest countdown to launch video for the game, Creative Director Cory Barlog, Principal Character Artist Rafael Grassetti, and Lead Gameplay Designer Jason McDonald tell us about the trolls.
"
The trolls are these fantastically big enemies that are throughout the game. They are a race of creatures that, at one time, were very plentiful. They had their own cultures, villages and cities and everything."
Barlog tells us that the trolls were betrayed by the gods and that led to their societies being completely destroyed, leaving only but a few of them wandering the world. "
So throughout the game you're not just fighting a troll, you're fighting a specific-named troll. A troll who has a history in this world and who actually, you know...is one of the few within their kind."
Rafael Grassetti comments that the trolls are one of the more intelligent races in
God of War. He also mention that "
they[trolls] actually have a religion and they pray to their totems. They take those totems and they kind of use them as their weapons.
The more difficult trolls you start seeing, the more corrupted they are from those weapons."
Grassetti says that the energy from the totems has consumed the trolls' bodies and that's, actually, one of the elements they decided to incorporate into their design because it helps bring them to life.
When talking about how to fight a troll in the game, Jason McDonald tells us that is fun seeing people fight the trolls because some of them are scared and run away or attack the trolls with the axe and from a distance.
"
It's fun to watch people fight the troll because some people are just so scared. They just run away all the time and throw their axe constantly. However, since you can aim your axe at his head and aim the axe at his arms and legs, there are certain parts of him that you can aim at...I would advice just getting in there and kicking his ass because Kratos can handle anything. "
His vengeance against the Gods of Olympus years behind him, Kratos now lives as a man in the realm of Norse Gods and monsters. It is in this harsh, unforgiving world that he must fight to survive…And teach his son to do the same. This startling reimagining of God of War deconstructs the core elements that defined the series—satisfying combat; breathtaking scale; and a powerful narrative—and fuses them anew.
God of War will be available exclusively for the PlayStation 4 when it releases on the 20th of April.
