New GOD OF WAR "Side-Story Project" Set In Greece Rumored To Release This Year

Industry veteran Jeff Grubb has shot down rumors of a remaster collection for God of War, claiming that we're instead getting a "side-story project" that will be set in Greece.

For weeks now there have been rumors of Sony remastering the classic God of War games in celebration of the franchise's 20th anniversary this year. However, industry veteran Jeff Grubb (of Giant Bomb) believes rumors of the remastered collection were a bit premature and instead claimed that we will be getting a "new side-story project" set in Greece.

“Everyone keeps asking about this, so I’ve tried to find out more,” Grubb wrote on Bluesky. “There’s still a Greek God of War thing coming out this year, but it’s not a remaster collection. It’s a new side-story project.”

Grubb then added: "I was never told about a Remaster collection, but I asked a source about the rumors (that I saw were focused on a collection) and they told me that nothing God of War would happen at the State of Play but something could show up at the anniversary.”

OK. Everyone keeps asking about this, so I've tried to find out more: There's still a Greek God of War thing coming out this year, but it's not a remaster collection. It's a new side-story project.

God of War officially turned 20 years old on March 22nd. The franchise debuted back in 2005 on PlayStation 2. There have since been a total of nine games released in the series. The first seven were loosely based on Greek mythology, while the most recent two games -- 2018's God of War and 2022's God of War Ragnarok -- are based on Norse mythology.

Sony is celebrating God of War's anniversary with a number of fun activities, but has not yet mentioned anything about a new side project or even the rumored remastered collection.

As part of the anniversary festivities, anyone who owns God of War Ragnarok can experience the "Dark Odyssey Collection" for free. This in-game update features special cosmetics for Kratos and his companions inspired by original two games.

Inspired by the working name of God of War (2005) and the skin that originally appeared in God of War II as a reward for beating the game on God Mode difficulty, we are bringing the classic black and gold theme for the 20th anniversary.

A new 20th anniversary retrospective book has also been announced. Arriving later this year, the book features interviews with the developers of the franchise across its 20-year history.

And while not related to the franchise's 20th anniversary, we recently got an update on Amazon's God of War TV series. The highly anticipated project, which was ordered at Amazon in December 2022 but has apparently undergone shifts in creative direction, has apparently already been greenlit for a second season. This is easily one of Amazon's biggest and most anticipated projects, especially coming off the successful adaptation fo Fallout.
