This week, Insomniac Games announced plans to bring Marvel's Spider-Man 2 to PC next year. However, the announcement was met with a bit of unfortunate news as the developer confirmed they have no plans to expand on the story through post-launch downloadable content.
"While we have no additional story content planned for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, we’re delighted to bring all of our previously released post-launch content to the PC version, including New Game+, new suits and color variants, Photo Mode features, and more," the developer said on the PlayStation Blog.
The news is somewhat surprising as a previous game update seemed to contain details about DLC plans. earlier this year, an update allowed fans to access some sort of tool menu to test the game. But it also appeared to outline the entire story arc pertaining to potential Beetle DLC, including new missions and boss fights. The leaked menu also seemed to align with a previous cyberattack against Insomniac games that also revealed a ton of information about the studio's future projects.
Alas though, it seems like this is confirmation that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will not be getting story-driven DLC. It seems like somewhat of an odd decision given how well the game sold though.
2018's Marvel's Spider-Man received an expansion shortly after launch. Titled "The City That Never Sleeps," it was a collection of downloadable content released in three distinct chapters — The Heist, Turf Wars, and Siler Lining — that served as an epilogue to the main game. Taking place three months after the conclusion of the main story, the DLC follows Spider-Man as he contends with a new crime wave led by the mob boss Hammerhead.
Insomniac Games also went on to release a full-fledged spin-off, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which coincided with the launch of the PlayStation 5. This focused on Miles' and his struggles to balance his personal life with that of his superhero duties. It also helped establish his role as a second playable Spider-Man, which directly impacted Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
While we won't get any story-based content, fans can look forward to some additional cosmetics. The Fly N' Fresh Suit Pack, which was made as a charity collab with non-profit Gameheads, will be available for PS5 players in October and PC players on launch at no additional cost.
Insomniac's decision not to release story content for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 could have something to do with the studio starting to shift its focus on Marvel's Wolverine.
