The numbers are in and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is a certified hit for PlayStation. However, the game's success extends beyond its auspicious debut, as Sony has disclosed that the sequel is the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game in Sony's history.
To be specific, following the first 24 hours of release, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 sold more than 2.5 million copies globally, making it the "fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game in PlayStation history." God of War: Ragnarok previously held the title.
Spider-Man 2 is an action-adventure game created by the award-winning video game studio Insomniac Games and distributed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Insomniac is part of Sony's stable of first-party studios that also includes Naughty Dog, Bend Studios, Sony Santa Monica, Sucker Punch Productions, and several others.
This feat is especially impressive when you realize Insomniac has outsold other first-party studios that release such celebrated titles as The Last of Us, God of War, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, and more.
Sony purchased Insomniac Games in 2019 for the tidy sum of $229 million.
Spider-Man 2 is a direct sequel to Marvel's Spider-Man (released in 2018) and 2020's Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and it was released on October 20, 2023 for the PS5.
The game features Peter Parker and Miles Morales as the two playable characters, who will team up to face a new threat: Venom. Other villains that have been confirmed to appear in the game include Kraven the Hunter, The Lizard, Sandman, Black Cat, and more.
It was stated earlier this year during Summer Game Fest that Eddie Brock will not be Venom's host once the symbiote departs Peter Parker. Most comic book and video game fans anticipate the space parasite bonding with Harry Osborn.
When it was released in 2018, the first Spider-Man game received positive reviews from critics as the gameplay, aesthetics, plot, and characterizations all received high marks. Based on 120 reviews, the game had an overall Metacritic score of 91%.
Oddly enough, the sequel also currently has an overall Metacritic score of 91% from 130 reviews.
