Some developers have revealed that the games that they release on both current and next-gen consoles will be able to be upgraded — giving players more options to keep playing their current-gen titles on the next generation of consoles; be it the Xbox Series X or the PlayStation 5.
A recent rumour, however, is suggesting that save data between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 titles, in particular, will not be transferrable at all — which is some rather disappointing news for those who won't be purchasing Sony's new console in the near future, but eventually will want to play some of the games that release on both platforms.
This information was initially reported by The Washington Post games reporter Gene Park, who made allusion to a tweet by Ryū ga Gotoku Studio in which the developer mentions that "Save data will not be transferrable between the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game" when specifically talking about the upcoming Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
According to Park, he has been hearing this information from several developers, so it may well end up happening that most PlayStation 4 games won't allow players to transfer their save data to the PlayStation 5, which is rather disappointing if true.
Unfortunately, the tweet initially tweeted by Park was misunderstood, which prompted him to delete it for further clarification. As it turns out, save data will not be able to be transferred between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games when upgrading to the next-gen version.
Those who purchase, for instance, Yakuza: Like a Dragon on PlayStation 4 will still be able to play both the physical or digital copy of the game on PlayStation 5, but they will have to start playing from the beginning; this isn't about backwards compatibility.
On a more positive note — and shout outs to the people over at PushSquare for pointing us in the right direction — Insomniac Games Community Director James Stevension has confirmed that save files for the PlayStation 4 version of MARVEL's Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be able to be transferred to the PlayStation 5.
PlayStation 5 is expected to launch on Thursday the 12th of November in the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea; worldwide release on Thursday the 19th of November.
