Sony has confirmed a significant price hike across its entire PlayStation 5 hardware lineup and the PlayStation Portal handheld. Effective April 2nd, 2026, the new recommended retail prices will apply in major markets, marking one of the most notable console price increases in recent gaming history.

The adjustments affect the base PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal. Sony attributes the changes to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape,” including rising component costs such as RAM and ongoing international trade negotiations.

New Official Prices (Effective April 2nd, 2026)

United States

  • PS5 (Disc Edition): $649.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition: $599.99
  • PS5 Pro: $899.99
  • PlayStation Portal: $249.99

United Kingdom

  • PS5 (Disc Edition): £569.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition: £519.99
  • PS5 Pro: £789.99
  • PlayStation Portal: £219.99

Europe

  • S5 (Disc Edition): €649.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition: €599.99
  • PS5 Pro: €899.99
  • PlayStation Portal: €249.99

Japan

  • PS5 (Disc Edition): ¥97,980
  • PS5 Digital Edition: ¥89,980
  • PS5 Pro: ¥137,980
  • PlayStation Portal: ¥39,980

Compared to launch pricing, the increases are substantial. The original PS5 Digital Edition launched at $399.99 and is now rising by $200. The PS5 Pro, which debuted at $699.99 in November 2024, jumps by $200 to $899.99. The standard disc-based PS5 sees a $150 increase from its original $499.99, while the PlayStation Portal rises from $199.99 to $249.99.

This marks a reversal of the traditional console pricing pattern, where hardware typically becomes more affordable over time through Slim revisions or sales. The PS5 Slim models released in November 2023 had already replaced the original design, but even those refreshed units are now subject to the new higher pricing.

Industry analysts have anticipated such a move for some time. Increasing production costs, particularly for high-speed RAM and other key components, have squeezed margins for console manufacturers. Global supply chain issues and tariff discussions between major economies have further complicated manufacturing expenses. Some experts even suggest these pressures could push back the launch timeline of the next-generation consoles.

The PlayStation 5 remains Sony’s most successful hardware generation to date, consistently outselling its main competitor and maintaining strong sales momentum more than five years after launch. However, the broader gaming hardware market is evolving rapidly, with rising development costs, shifting consumer habits, and competition from PC gaming and cloud services putting pressure on traditional console pricing models.

For fans who typically wait for price drops before purchasing new hardware, the announcement is disappointing. Instead of the expected gradual decline, Sony is raising prices well into the console’s lifecycle. This could prompt some buyers to purchase sooner rather than later, especially if they were planning to pick up a PS5 Pro or additional Portal unit.

The price increase arrives at a time when many gamers are already feeling the pinch from higher game prices and subscription service costs. Whether the move will impact PS5 sales momentum or simply be absorbed by dedicated fans remains to be seen.

Sony has not commented on whether similar increases will apply to accessories or if any promotional bundles will be offered to soften the blow before April 2nd. In the meantime, anyone considering a new PlayStation 5 purchase may want to check current retailer stock and pricing before the new rates take effect.

The era of steadily declining console prices appears to be shifting, and this announcement serves as a clear signal that the economics of gaming hardware have changed. For PlayStation fans, the decision now comes down to whether the enhanced experiences offered by the PS5 and PS5 Pro still justify the higher entry point in 2026 and beyond.
