Pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 weren't supposed to go live until the day following the PS5 Showcase. However, some retailers appeared to jump the gun and set live pre-orders for the highly anticipated next-gen console. With reports of limited availability due to production woes, millions had panicked to reserve their PlayStation 5 for fear of missing out. The result was mass chaos.
Even to this day, people are sitting by awaiting notifications for when retailers have new PlayStation 5 consoles in stock. It's certainly not a consumer-friendly process and Sony has issue an apology for how it has been handled.
"Let’s be honest: PS5 preorders could have been a lot smoother. We truly apologize for that," Sony wrote in a tweet while also promising to release more PlayStation 5 consoles pre pre-order over the next few days. Should you miss out on this next wave of units, Sony says more PlayStation 5 consoles will be available through the end of the year. However, specific production numbers probably won't be revealed, so the FOMO will likely continue throughout the year, or at least until there's confidence that there will be enough consoles for everyone at or around launch.
The PlayStation 5 launches on November 12 in the U.S., Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. The global rollout for the rest of the world will continue on November 19.
There are two console models available for purchase. The PS5 Digital Edition, which doesn't feature a disc drive, is $399.99. There's also the slightly more expensive PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive for $499.99. So far it seems retailers have been getting more of the PS5 with Ultra HD blu-ray disc drive model. Other than the disc drive, both models have the same specs.
