It is no secret that the PlayStation Vita was not met with the success that Sony was hoping for, especially after seeing how successful the highly praised PlayStation Portable, the console's predecessor, was.
While the PlayStation Vita did have a solid lineup of titles at launch, its biggest competitor was Sony's very own PlayStation 4 — since the company decided to shift their focus to what they thought would be the most profitable console of the two; a big mistake, in some regards.
In May of last year Sony officially announced that they were going to be stopping production of physical games for the PlayStation Vita, which was one of the final nails on the portable console's coffin, and new information reveals that Sony are simply done with the handheld market.
During a recent interview with Game Informer, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan praised the PlayStation Vita as a great console, but also reveals that fans probably shouldn't hold their breath waiting for Sony to make another handheld console in the near future; if at all.
"
PlayStation Vita was brilliant in many ways, and the actual gaming experience was great, but clearly it’s a business that we’re no longer in now," revealed Ryan; this time, definitely putting the final nail on the PlayStation Vita's coffin.
Looking back, the PlayStation Vita was a console that was definitely ahead of its time, but mismanagement and lack of vision ended up making it the best handheld console on the market that no one bought. Hopefully, one day Sony will release another handheld console, since the PlayStation Portable proved that they have what it takes to make it a great console.
