At E3 2017 this past June, President of Sony Interactive Entertainment America Shawn Layden
revealed that Sony had sold over 60 million PS4 consoles and he was hopeful that the upcoming Spider-Man game would get the company across the 100 million mark. Well, at the rate Sony's going, they won't need a huge push from Marvel's wall-crawler. Sony has just released a press statement, revealing that over 70.6 million PS4 consoles have now been sold worldwide. That means roughly 10 million consoles have been sold in 4 months.
The PlayStation 4 launched in North American in November 2013 and Japan in February 2014. Since launch, there have been several different iterations of the console, including the PS4 Slim and the PS4 Pro.
“
We are delighted that so many people are enjoying the unique entertainment proposition of PlayStation 4, and that an emerging technology like PlayStation VR continues to gain traction,” said Andrew House, Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment in the press release. “
I cannot thank our fans and partners enough. Their support, since the launch of the very first PlayStation in 1994, has helped to make PlayStation one of the biggest console gaming networks in the world. We will continue to work closely with partners to maintain this momentum, and remain steadfast in making PS4 the best place to play.”
There's still Christmas to get through and a ton of AAA PS4-exclusive titles releasing in early-2018 which makes the company's goal of shipping 100 million consoles well within reach. Perhaps they'll make it one of their New Year's Resolutions...
