Sony's PlayStation 4 is officially the fastest console to hit the 100 million mark in terms of units sold.
Sony's Q1 FY2019 consolidated financial results, revealed that 3.2 million PS4 units were sold, bringing the grand total to over 100 million as of the end of June 2019. As
IGN notes, the 3.2 million units sold is up from the 2.6 million units of last quarter (Q4 FY2018) and equal to the 3.2 million sold in the year-ago quarter.
Niko Partners Senior Analyst, Daniel Ahmad pointed out that the five years and seven months needed to reach 100 million units sold is faster than both the PlayStation 2 and Wii. Sony's PS2 hit the same milestone in five years and nine months.
Sony expects to sell 15 million PlayStation 4 units throughout fiscal year 2019, which ends on March 31, 2020. The PS4 will still climb the lifetime sales charts, likely surpassing the Wii, original PlayStation, and possibly Game Boy; but, with the PS5 on the horizon, it's unlikely to outsell the PS2 (155M units) in its lifetime.
PlayStation 4 software sales came in at 42.9 million for the past three months, down from the 54.7 million last quarter, but up from the 40.6 million sold during the same period last year. Sony also revealed there are now 36.2 million PlayStation Plus subscribers, also down from the 36.4 million last quarter, but up from the 33.9 million in Q1 FY2018.
