Naughty Dog's original The Last of Us was released in 2013, and since then the developers have gone on to create titles like Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, which saw them expand and improve on many of core mechanics of their games.
As such, it shouldn't come as much of surprise to learn that Naughty Dog has once taken components from their previous games grown them out even further in The Last of Us Part II. And based on some new comments from director Neil Druckmann, it looks as if players can expect to have even larger areas to explore in the highly anticipated sequel.
"As you saw with Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy, we’re experimenting with much larger layouts,” Druckmann revealed on the PlayStation Blog. “We’re going to do that with this game, and find ways to use that to mirror the story. When we want tension to drop, and we want you to think ‘What do I do next? What do I want to explore here?’ We have that.”
The director didn't provide any further details on these "larger layouts," but given recent comments that the game will be about 50% bigger and some incredibly gameplay footage, it would be safe to guess that we haven't seen the full scope of the game.
The Last of Us Part 2 releases exclusively for the PS4 on February 21, 2020 and will see Ashley Johnson return as Ellie and Troy Baker reprise his role as Joel.
