Sony's newly announced PlayStation Productions is said already have multiple projects underway and now we know what at least one of them will be. During an investor relations presentation today, Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra confirmed that development on a new television series based on the Twisted Metal game series is officially underway.
"We have a TV show we just agreed to get underway that will be developed from the IP on PlayStation, it’s called Twisted Metal,” Vinciquerra revealed. “It’s a game that was put out many years ago and we’re going to develop a TV series around that."
Twisted Metal is a vehicular combat series that first debuted on PlayStation in 1995. Sony has since gone on to release numerous sequels and spin-offs for the various PlayStation consoles, with the most recent game releasing for PlayStation 3 in 2012. Around that time, Sony Pictures Entertainment was exploring bringing Twisted Metal to the big screen, but it never actually came to fruition.
Plot details for the TV series remain under wraps, but the video game franchise focused on the mini-stories of the individual characters entering the Twisted Metal contest in hopes of having their wish granted if they emerge victorious. Each character had their own reason for entering the contest, but the winner's wish was usually granted by Calypso with a twist. Sweet Tooth, aka Needles Kane, has long been the face of the Twisted Metal franchise, so it'll be interesting if the series focuses on his story.
