Wizards of the Coast has issued a new round of bans in Magic: The Gathering, targeting some of the strongest cards currently shaping Standard. Badgermole Cub, Gran-Gran, and Stormchaser’s Talent are now banned in the format, while The Fantasticar has been banned in Legacy and restricted in Vintage.

Badgermole Cub, a Mythic Rare from the Avatar set, had climbed to roughly $60 on the secondary market and served as a cornerstone of multiple green strategies. According to Wizards, the card became especially dominant in the Selesnya Offense archetype, which held both the highest play rate and the highest win rate in Standard. The situation drew comparisons to earlier periods when a single powerful engine, such as Vivi Ornitier in Izzet Cauldron decks, warped the format so heavily that targeted bans became necessary. After the announcement, the card’s price on major marketplaces dropped into the $40 range, with further movement expected as the ban takes effect.

Gran-Gran, also from the Avatar set, functioned as an efficient mana engine in Lesson-based decks and helped power the Jeskai Lessons strategy. Stormchaser’s Talent, originally printed in Bloomburrow, offered a low-cost early play with strong late-game payoff and had become a reliable piece in Izzet Prowess lists. By removing one key card from each of the top three performing decks, Wizards aimed to prevent any single remaining archetype from simply inheriting the metagame vacuum left by the green strategies.

In its official Banned and Restricted announcement, Wizards stated that the changes were made to support the long-term health of Standard. The format has operated under a three-year rotation window while also receiving a higher volume of new sets each year. That combination can allow older cards to gain sudden new relevance when fresh tools arrive, sometimes creating power imbalances that are difficult to correct through normal set design alone. The August bans follow the same philosophy used in previous high-profile actions: remove the most extreme engines rather than force the entire field to warp around them.

The Fantasticar, a standout card from the Marvel Super Heroes set, received separate treatment in older formats. The three-mana artifact could generate four 4/4 flying haste tokens if a player cast four spells in a turn, a condition that is relatively easy to meet with cantrips and cheap interaction. Wizards banned it in Legacy after only about six weeks in the format and restricted it in Vintage, citing its explosive potential in those higher-powered environments.

Reaction among players has been mixed. Some welcomed the intervention, arguing that Selesnya Offense and the supporting engines had compressed the range of viable decks. Others expressed frustration at the loss of expensive cards and at the frequency of bans in a format that already rotates more slowly than it once did. The secondary market impact on Badgermole Cub in particular has been immediate, as is typical when a high-demand Mythic suddenly becomes unusable in the premier constructed format.

These bans arrive against a broader backdrop of ongoing discussion about Standard’s structure. The extended rotation period keeps more cards legal for longer, which can increase both the depth of the format and the risk of powerful multi-set combinations. Wizards has repeatedly chosen direct bans when specific cards or packages reach a level of dominance that mirrors past problem decks. The August announcement continues that pattern by simultaneously cutting the top green strategy and weakening the next two most successful archetypes.

For tournament players, the immediate effect will be a reshuffling of the Standard metagame. Decks built around Badgermole Cub lose their central engine. Jeskai Lessons and Izzet Prowess must adapt without Gran-Gran and Stormchaser’s Talent, respectively. How quickly new contenders emerge will depend on which remaining cards and combinations can absorb the open share of the metagame. In Legacy and Vintage, the restriction and ban of The Fantasticar remove a recent high-ceiling threat that had already begun to influence deck construction.

Wizards has framed the changes as necessary maintenance rather than a temporary patch. Whether the adjusted Standard environment feels healthier will become clearer in the coming weeks of league play and major events. For now, three previously prominent cards are gone from Standard, a valuable Mythic has lost a significant portion of its competitive demand, and older formats have been shielded from one of the more explosive new tools. The August 2026 Banned and Restricted update is one of the more sweeping single-format interventions in recent months, and its effects will shape the next stretch of competitive Magic.
