An exciting update on Amazon's live-action Warhammer 40,000 project has just emerged.
While it's still unclear as to whether this is a television or film adaptation from Amazon, a new financial report from Games Workshop has revealed that famed horror director and writer Mike Flanagan, best known for The Life of Chuck, Midnight Mass, and The Haunting of Hill House, has joined the project in a creative capacity.
In the financial document, Game Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree revealed that Flanagan has already delivered an outline/treatment and that a more detailed script should be completed soon.
Rountree confirmed that former Superman actor Henry Cavill remains involved in a creative capacity and worked with Flanagan on the treatment.
However, Rountree also cautioned that the project was still in its early stages and that its development would not be rushed. "This is a long-term partnership with Amazon – and these adaptations will take years to bring successfully to market."
Additionally, the financial report also disclosed that an animated Warhammer 40K project is also in development, which will center on the Space Marines – Deathwatch. John Orloff (Masters of the Air, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole) is writing the script.
Yet another animated project is also in development, as it was disclosed that Warhammer will be featured in Amazon's Secret Level season 2, with a segment focused on the Age of Signmar.
No further details were revealed about either animated project, but it certainly has the Warhammer fandom excited and already speculating about what stories will be adapted and what characters could appear.
The confirmation of Cavill's continued involvement with the Amazon project comes as a sigh of relief, as it was speculated that Cavill's extended silence on the project might have been a sign that he'd dropped out.
Back in 2024, Cavill gave statements on the adaptation that made Warhammer fans happy that he was involved creatively. "I can’t say too much, again, it’s early days still. But to have this opportunity to bring it to screen, and be at the tiller so it can be faithful, is key to me," said Cavill.
"This is the stuff I’ve been dealing with since I was a kid. This is the stuff I spend my free time daydreaming about, as an adult as well, and I get to bring it into life. There is no greater reason than I joined the industry than doing something like this."
Warhammer 40,000, frequently abbreviated as Warhammer 40k, is a 1987 science fiction tabletop miniature wargame developed by Games Workshop. It is set in a gloomy and dark future in which humanity is continuously at odds with a variety of extraterrestrial species and supernatural forces.
Once a niche tabletop game played in local game stores and comic book shops, Warhammer is now a global entertainment franchise. While there have been popular books and comic books based on Warhammer, today, video games serve as the single biggest gateway for new fans thanks to hits like Space Marine 2 and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide.
