Everyone who has had the hance to play the original
Battletoads game, released for the NES in the early 90s, knows how difficult and unfair the game was; even for 90s standards of video game difficulty, which says a lot about it. On top of this,
Battletoads is actually considered to be a good game, since level design wasn't one of the problems.
Developer Rare has commented on the game's difficulty over the years, and the reason why it was so hard was because the developers kept feeling like the game needed an extra challenge to the point it got somewhat out of hand; with the developers not realising this because of how used to playing those difficult levels they were.
When the new
Battletoads was announced during the E3 in 2018, fans immeditely began experiencing some flashbacks of those unforgiving levels, especially the one with the hoverbikes. Then, Rare released a gameplay trailer during this year's E3, and it looked a lot friendlier.
While the new
Battletoads game may look friendlier, it seems that it will still will offer players quite the challenge; the difference is that the developers also want the game to be fair.
In a recent interview with IGN, head of Rare Craig Duncan has revealed that the developers want the new
Battletoads game to be "hard but achievable", by offering a challenge but one that isn't too frustrating like the original
Battletoads title.
"
You wouldn't believe how many discussions about this we've had with the team. We want it to be hard, but achievable. Even with the original BattleToads, one of the things it did really well is that it had patterns you could learn. Nobody wants to be punished for the sake of being punished," revealed Duncan to IGN.
Battletoads still doesn't have an official release date, but fans of the series can rest assure that the game will not be an infuriating mess of unfair levels that require trial and error to complete; it just won't be a walk in the park either.
The Battletoads are back and coming to Xbox Game Pass! The wait is almost over! Zitz, Pimple and Rash are returning at last to Morph Attack their way through an all-new action-packed adventure of choreographed chaos. Couch co-op may never be the same again.
