Today is a glorious day for "Gear Heads" all around the world. Everyone (who didn't get the early edition) can finally get their hands on another epic Gears of War game. With plenty of new enemies, weapons and other activities; gamers all around the world will have plenty to do inside the game. What do we think of is so far? That can be seen below, but first, check out the epic launch trailer for the game.
Gears of War 4 continues the already stellar saga that has been created over the past decade. Rod Fergusson, Studio Head at The Coalition summed up what their latest game means to both fans of the franchise and new comers by saying,
“’Gears of War 4’ is the culmination of an incredible journey and almost three years of passion and dedicated work by our studio team. Whether you’ve been a fan from day one or have never played a Gears game before, ‘Gears of War 4’ is a great opportunity to jump in as we kick off an all-new saga.”
How is the game so far? We polled a few Gamefragger insiders on their likes and dislikes of the game so far. The game itself is broken down into three modes: campaign, versus and horde modes.
Multiplayer: Gnasher Gnasher Gnasher! Get accustomed to using the gnasher, because outside of the special weapons (necessary for winning the match) all other weapons are turd burgers. Sure you can kill people with a chainsaw, but expect to unload a few mags to take anyone out. This is something I thought they'd take care of after the beta. Using one weapon gets kind of boring after awhile. Unless you can get your hands on frags, the dropshot, torque bow, etc. You will spend ALL of your time using the gnasher.
Horde Mode: The horde mode is very fun, but at times it can be really really slow. Some of the enemies require that you seek them out in the beginning to finish the round. In horde you can pick from 5 different classes: Scout, Soldier, Sniper, Engineer and Heavy. Each class is able to equip cards that give them specific perks. For instance and engineer can equip a fortification card that gives all fortifications they build bonus health. Once each class reaches level 10 they'll be able to equip a total of 5 different cards to help them in battle.
Leveling a class is really slow and kind of annoying at times. You can accumulate cards through the horde packs in the store (no purchase necessary) by playing any type of mode other than the campaign. The upgrade system was cumbersome at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's alright.
Tips & Tricks For Horde Mode: During the game when you kill an enemy you pick up energy that can be brought back to a fabricator. A fabricator allows you to build things. An engineer and a scout are a must have when playing. Engineers can build & repair things at a discounted cost. Scouts get bonus energy when they pick it up during battle. A weapons cache is also a must have. You can store all those heavy hitting weapons and the best part is the weapons cache refills the ammo on them.
Campaign: All of the Gears of War have amazing campaign stories backing the game. In fact, if you've never played any of the games before, do yourself a favor and pick up the Gears of War 4 Ultimate Edition as you will get all the Xbox 360 games with the purchase. The campaign starts off on a prologue journey where Gin the leader of the COG (Coalition of Organized Governments) recalls how they won the war against the locusts.
After that you begin to play as JD Fenix (James Dominic Fenix). JD has a team of outlanders and their goal is to secure a fabrication box to power their settlement. Of course it all goes awry when Gin finds outs their after the fabricator. She sends hoards of robots to defend the fabricator and capture JD and his friends. They soon find out the Gin isn't after them because of the fabricator, but more so because "her" people have started to dissapear.
Fleeing from Gin and her robotic hoard, they turn for some help from JD's father Marcus Fenix. From there, they must discover what is going on while avoiding Gin and her death squads. The campaign is very fun and entertaining. At times it is a little repetitive, but that is easily fixed by a chainsaw.
Overall: The game has a lot to offer and our group of guys have already had some great PvP and horde matches. For those who likes great story lines, pvp and like to face wave after wave of enemie combatants, this game is for you. Gears of War 4 with JD Fenix definitely lays the foundation to a new generation Gears of War games. There is plenty of action in our future!
