Yacht Club Games'
Shovel Knight is definitely one of the most important video games in the indie scene, becoming one of the most popular platformers to be released in recent years; proving that great games don't necessarily come from triple-A developers.
The game's Kickstarter campaign began in March of 2013 and pretty quickly reached its goal, with Yacht Club Games finally releasing
Shovel Knight for the Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and Microsoft; eventually releasing on even more consoles.
In a recent interview with Games Industry, Yacht Club Games Chief Operating Officer James Chan revealed that they the upcoming
King of Cards expansion and
Shovel Knight: Showdown mean the end of their Kickstarter list for
Shovel Knight.
"[King of Cards and Showdown] is the end of the Kickstarter list. That's it. This will be the wrap up, this will be the end of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, and then it'll be pre-production on the next thing, which we're not quite sure what it is yet," revealed Chan while also adding that they are "gonna end the five year dev cycle, take a couple of weeks off, and then come back and say 'Okay, what are we gonna do?'"
This obviously doesn't mean that Yacht Club Games will completely abandon the
Shovel Knight franchise. In fact, it is very likely that the next project is a direct sequel to the game, or maybe even a brand-new intellectual property. Even if a new franchise was the case,
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is a fantastic title that brims with content that adds a lot of replay value.
Whatever the case, all eyes will definitely be on Yacht Club Games when they announce their next big project; after all, they've really delivered a great game with
Shovel Knight and people should expect no less from either a direct sequel, or a new thing altogether.
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is the full and complete edition of Shovel Knight, a sweeping classic action adventure game series with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic!
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is currently available for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC, macOS, and Linux.
