According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Rovio CEO Kati Levoranta announced to investors that the company has begun to develop the sequel to this year's Angry Birds Movie. The film earned $346.9 million worldwide from a production budgt of $73 million. Add to the fact that many of the same digital assetts used to make the first film can be reused to produce a sequel and it stands to reason that making another installment is pretty much a no-brainer as a sequel will cost less than the original.
However, news of a sequel shouldn't be considered gospel just yet as Sony Pictures has yet to make an official statement. Yet, the end of the first film definitely laid the groundwork for a sequel as "The Blues" arrived on the island just as the credits began to roll.
The Angry Birds movie still has a bit more money to earn at the international box office as it doesn't open in Japan until October.
SYNOPSIS
The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis – We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride – This is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.
