The extremely talented and infamous Uwe Boll is known for making such cinematic wonders as Alone in The Dark, BloodRayne, and Name of The King. But those are just a few of the famed video games that he has turned into wonderful films that not only transcend the genre of film, but also transcend that of video games themselves. Alright, I may have been very sarcastic in saying all of that, as Uwe Boll isn't exactly a good director...like at all, but he has made a load of films that leaves me shocked he A). wanted to make them, and B). someone in Hollywood gave him permission to make them.
Sadly however, it appears as if this whole dog and pony show is coming to an end. Uwe Boll isn't exactly in the best of moods lately and thats perfectly fine. When you're a director who is more or less a big joke in Hollywood, a director that critics love to hate (and rightfully so), a director who makes films only for them to make a few million dollars, you can get pretty tired of the ride after awhile. In a recent interview with Metro News, Uwe Boll, or "UB", as he liked his colleagues to call him, reveals that the reason he isn't making anymore movies is because there isn't in money in the market left.
“The market is dead. You don’t make any money anymore on movies because the DVD and Blu Ray market worldwide has dropped 80 per cent in the last three years. That is the real reason; I just cannot afford to make movies. I can’t go back to student filmmaking because I have made so many movies in my life, and I can’t make cheaper and cheaper movies at my age. It’s a shame. I would be happy to make movies but it is just not financially profitable.”
Uwe Boll(UB) then goes on to reveal the real and legitimate reason why he isn't make anymore movie: those little rascals known as critics.
“Now when I don’t make any more movies, maybe they’ll find the time to actually watch the movies, starting with Postal in 2005, the movies of the last ten years. They will see they were a lot of very interesting movies and a lot of movies that I think made sense and said a point about things. They deserve to be discussed bigger than they were.”
To try and save face, UB was saying that there isn't any money left in the market of movies, since DVD and Blu-Ray sales have plummeted exponentially. But in the process, he let slip that he really doesn't want to go through another critical failure that ends with him still being labeled as the worst director in Hollywood. And going back to the DVD and Blu-Ray thing, you have to give credit to UB to know where he gets his money. Its not when his movies play in theaters, its when the thing is finally put on a DVD and some poor fan of a video game series buys the thing, not knowing that it is a terrible film and that it had a (probably) short rotation in theaters. UB makes his money off of that, and he realizes that people have started to become hip to his game.
But it's somewhat sad knowing that one of the greatest "inept on almost every level, but good for some head-slapping, incredulous laughter"* Directors of this era is taking a bow. Hopefully he'll return in the far off, very distant future.
*A reviewer actually said this about UB's classic Alone in The Dark. The nerve of them.
