Detective Pikachu will feature Ryan Reynolds as the titular Pokemon. Alongside him will star Justice Smith as Tim Goodman, Detective Pikachu's human sidekick. Together, the duo aim to solve the mystery surrounding Tim's missing father. The live-action
Pokemon film will be releasing in just six days time on May 10th.
Almost six months ago, the first trailer for
Detective Pikachu was released online. For the first time, the internet bore witness to the popular franchise's first step into the realm of live-action. It was also during this trailer that the world would be introduced to a lovable, deerstalker-wearing Pikachu which had the voice of Ryan Reynolds coming out of its mouth.
While the trailer was overall a hit, and anticipation for the film had begun to grow, Reynolds' voice would prove to be one of its most divisive aspects. The Detective Pikachu of the video-game (of the same name, which the film is loosely based on) had a much more gruff and deep voice, this is obviously quite the contrast with Reynolds' voice.
Reynolds recently had an interview with
Comicbook.com wherein he discussed being cast as the titular Pokemon. Interestingly, Reynolds believes that he was cast on-account of his take on the character. When asked how much influence he had over the script and the character, Reynolds explained the following:
"I think they hired me for some of that, a whole bunch of us took passes at the script -- I also took a pass at the script. We all got to kind of shape it the way we wanted; I got to make sure the voice sort of worked the way I think it could work for me. Inevitably, I'm at the mercy of the filmmakers." So without Reynolds this iteration of the iconic character would likely be wholly different as the actor evidently contributed much more than his voice to the role.
Detective Pikachu is set to release in theatres on May 10th, 2019.
