Alicia Vikander was recently at TIFF to promote two indie films, Euphoria (which she also produced) and Submergence. However, The Hollywood Reporter couldn't let Vikander go before asking her about the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot.
"She's a very loved character and I grew up playing the games. I was thrilled [back] when I was 15 and saw the films with Angelina Jolie. She really made her into an icon with those films. The video game went through quite a change, it got rebooted in 2013 and it's very much an origin story. It's kind of the girl-next-door taking on a journey of becoming the action hero we very much know her to be. I definitely think there's a lot of elements there [in terms of] both honoring the character people know and a lot of new elements that people will hopefully be surprised and engaged to see."
Vikander seems to be under the impression that the general public might be unaware of the younger Lara Croft that was introduced in the reboot. But is that actually the case? Do people still think of Croft as the busty, short shorts wearing middle-aged archaeologist? The reboot saw her re-imagined as a young archaeology school graduate who's thesis on the location of the lost kingdom of Yamatai convinced his descendants to fund an expedition to find it. The game went on to sale over 8.5 million copies, making it the highest-selling Tomb Raider title to date. It's sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, was released in 2015 and sold over 1 million copies in less than a year's time.
