Warner Bros. has moved up the release date of its action-packed video game adaptation
Rampage one week from April 20 to April 13.
Per THR, sources say the move is in response to Disney shifting its blockbuster Marvel film
Avengers: Infinity War from May 4 to April 27, which would've given
Rampage just one week in theaters before Thanos' big arrival.
Rampage's producers reportedly wanted to preserve a two-week cushion between its release and the release of what is sure to be a box office behemoth in Marvel's
Infinity War.
Rampage stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who is coming off the very successful
Jumanji reboot for Sony Pictures. Despite Johnson's star power, however, it's unlikely that even he could out-muscle Earth's Mightiest at the box office. Warner Bros. is clearly hoping to replicate The Rock's success with
Jumanji by doing whatever is necessary, including pushing the release date up a week to give it a two week window.
On the bright side,
Rampage, which is adapted from the 1980s Midway arcade classic, is testing well with audiences. For those unfamiliar with the game, the general plot revolves around mutated creates - a gorilla, crocodile, and wolf - causing mayhem across the globe. There wasn't really a story by today's video game standards, so the movie adaptation
has put one in with Johnson's character David Okoye forming a close relationship with the silverback gorilla George.
Rampage now roars into theaters April 13.
