Earlier this week, Paramount Pictures released the first trailer for the live-action
Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and the reception was — to put it very, very lightly — not good; with fans completely trashing on the beloved blue hedgehog's redesign.
On account of the backlash,
Sonic the Hedgehog Director, Jeff Fowler, took to Twitter to announce that they have heard fan complaints loud and clear, and that they will be changing Sonic's redesign before the movie hits theaters on the
7th of November.
Yuji Naka, one of the co-creators of Sega's iconic video game character, was one of the first to express his disappointment with the movie's version of Sonic, and now that the movie's director has revealed that Sonic will be redesigned, he thanks fans for being vocal about the whole deal.
"
The power of Sonic fans is amazing. It is good to go in a good direction. Thank you so much for loving Sonic", shared Naka on Twitter after Jeff Fowler tweeted his response to the backlash.
Hopefully the new design is one that looks more like the video game version of Sonic; one that is both timeless and respects the source material, since the one that appears in the trailer was almost an insult to both the character and the fans of the blue hedgehog.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
