It's an open secret that Sony and Microsoft are working on the successors to the PS4 and the Xbox One.  And while Nintendo has returned to form with the Switch, could the next PS4 and Xbox One actually face its stiffest competition from Google?

Already a major player on the mobile scene thanks to its Google Play store, the search engine company is reportedly looking to make its very own console.  The news comes by way of Kotaku, who says the code name for the console is the "Yeti." It's unclear at this time whether Yeti will be the name of Google's streaming platform, its console or both.

The report states that Google's strategy will be a focus on streaming, an increasingly popular pastime thanks to the likes of Twitch and YouTube.  They'll also be looking to staff their new video game division through major acquisitions.

Kotaku says its sources stem from Google taking meetings at the Game Developers Conference back in March and more recently, just a few weeks ago at E3.

The video game industry has been a three-horse race in terms of consoles after Sega stopped manufacturing the Dreamcast back in 2001.
