Its safe to say that the public perception of Konami isn't exactly glowing at the moment following their treatment of the creator of the Metal Gear franchise, Hideo Kojima. It looks like Metal Gear Survive won't be doing any favors for the company on that front as it's been confirmed that the game will require a constant online connection and will contain microtransactions.
This news comes from Gamespot after attending a preview event for Metal Gear Survive. A representative from Konami has claimed that the game requires a constant internet connection in order to provide a seamless experience between single player and multiplayer. The publisher also explained that this will allow them to "provide ongoing content post-launch" in other words expect plenty of DLC and updates.
Brand Manager Jennifer Tsang has said that the single player will take around 15-20 hours to complete but don't take this as an exact estimate as everyone plays games differently and tackles things differently. Regardless it does seem like there could be a lot of content here for completionists and plenty of opportunities for trophies and achievements.
It's also been confirmed that Metal Gear Survive will have its own microtransactions store and virtual currency. Players will be able to gather coins through standard gameplay or they will be available to buy for real money. Through spending coins in the store, you will get access to various boosts and benefits which will be available for a specific amount of time. The more coins you spend the longer you will have access to these benefits.
It is worth mentioning that 'always online' and microtransactions have become commonplace in most AAA titles but this is a source of controversy for gamers. Games like Destiny and The Division require a constant internet connection and it looks like Konami could be looking to replicate this model of gameplay. Metal Gear Solid V also contained microtransactions which you could use to upgrade Mother Base but in the wake of the recent controversy behind microtransactions, it does seem a bit tone deaf on their part. It's clear that it's going to be an uphill battle and it won't be an easy one.
So what do you guys think? What're your impressions of Metal Gear Survive so far? How do you feel about microtransactions being included?
