Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws reached a momentous milestone today as the developer announced the highly anticipated game has gone gold.
"Going gold," for those unfamiliar, means that Star Wars Outlaws is now ready to be shipped to packagers and distributors and printed onto discs — a phrase more commonly used when physical games were more prominent. Although games are now primarily released through digital storefronts, the phrase is used to signal that principal development has been "completed".
"Our team can't wait for you to start exploring the Outer Rim and living the life of a scoundrel," Ubisoft wrote on the Star Wars Outlaws Twitter/X account alongside a brief teaser featuring cinematics from the game.
While primary development on the game is now complete there are still about two months left until Star Wars Outlaws officially releases. Ubisoft Massive will likely use this time to refine and polish the game before its launch. This will likely include fixing any bugs discovered late in the cycle and readying a patch or update that will probably be available on day one (or shortly after).
As the box art cover for the game notes, an internet connection is required to install the game. This means Ubisoft could theoretically package any last-minute fixes into a launch day update.
It's also possible that Massive Entertainment will now use this time to focus on any post-launch content they have planned. Ubisoft has already confirmed that Star Wars Outlaws will have two post-launch DLCs in the Season Pass (included with the Gold Edition of the game). This time could be used to work on any post-launch missions, costumes, story content, and more.
Dubbed the "first open world Star Wars game," Star Wars Outlaws puts players players in the shoes of Kay Vess, a scoundrel seeking freedom and the means to start a new life. Set in between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, players will explore distinct locations across the galaxy — both iconic and new — while embarking on high-stakes missions from the galaxy's crime syndicates.
Star Wars Outlaws is set to launch on August 30. It will be available for PS5/PS4, Xbox, and PC. Those who purchase the Gold or Ultimate Edition or subscribe to Ubisoft+ Premium will get to start playing three days early.
